What is
Infectology?
Infectology aims to identify and professionally treat infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or single-cell organisms that can spread between humans or between humans and animals, even in cases of rare, tropical, or diseases uncommon in Hungary. One of the most important symptoms of infectious diseases is fever, which is our body’s response to pathogens multiplying in our body. Feel free to contact our Institution for the examination of your febrile illness. Another goal of infectology is to prevent infectious diseases through vaccinations or drug therapy. In Hungary, besides mandatory vaccinations, there are recommended vaccinations (e.g., against influenza, meningitis) available, and our specialist is happy to provide information about these details.
Before traveling abroad, it’s advisable to learn about common diseases in the destination country and recommended or mandatory vaccinations and preventive medications. When planning your trip, our specialist will gladly inform you about the epidemiological requirements of your destination country, and necessary vaccinations can be administered during the consultation.
When should you visit the infectology department?
What happens during an infectology examination?
The examination primarily involves a conversation aimed at identifying locations, situations, and contact persons characteristic of a specific disease. Additionally, blood tests may be necessary to detect characteristic blood count abnormalities, antibodies produced by the body’s immune system (serological testing), or even the specific pathogen. Depending on the affected organs, stool or urine sample analysis may also be required. For upper respiratory complaints, throat or nasal secretion analysis may be necessary to detect pathogens, for which our specialist will take a sample using a cotton swab. To recognize symptoms characteristic of a specific infectious disease, our specialist may examine you (listening to heart and lungs, blood pressure measurement, throat examination, etc.), which is not uncomfortable.
