What does
Internal Medicine deal with?
Internal medicine serves as the foundation for many other medical specialties (cardiology, endocrinology, diabetology, gastroenterology), with the internist summarizing and integrating these fields. It deals with the treatment of sudden complaints as well as the management of chronic diseases that may last for decades. In addition, it places significant emphasis on disease prevention, screening for certain conditions, and providing lifestyle advice.
When should you visit an internist?
How does an internal medicine examination proceed?
During a general internal medicine examination, our specialist first conducts a detailed medical history intake, gathering information about your known illnesses, medications, and previous surgeries. This is a longer conversation, covering not only your current complaints but also many other necessary questions that may seem irrelevant but guide the doctor in the right direction. Afterward, our specialist will examine you. The physical examination consists of many small assessments that are painless, and the entire process takes only a few minutes. This includes listening to the heart and lungs, measuring blood pressure, palpating the abdomen, examining the throat and neck, and several other minor checks. For a comprehensive assessment, blood, urine, or stool sample analysis may also be required.
